75 jaar Club Antwerpen opgetekend

Op 12 April 1930 werd de eerste Soroptimistclub in België opgericht en wel te Antwerpen.

In het boekje “75 jaar Club Antwerpen opgetekend” belicht Jeannine Lambrechts, ereconservator van de Stad Antwerpen en lid van SI Antwerpen, hoe Soroptimist startte in België, wat de moeilijkheden waren die de stichters ondervonden bij de stichting en tijdens de oorlogsjaren, en hoe zij voor de uitbreiding van Soroptimist in BelgIë en Luxemburg zorgden.

Ondertussen werd het historieboekje ook in het Frans “Impressions 75 ans Club d’Anvers” en in het Engels “75 years Antwerp Club annotated” vertaald en gedrukt.

Inleiding
75 jaar geleden werd voor het eerst een Soroptimist Club in België opgericht en wel te Antwerpen in 1930. De eerste club ontstond in de Verenigde Staten, in 1921, naar het voorbeeld van de Rotary club, gesticht in 1905 en uitsluitend aan mannen voorbehouden.
Hoe en waarom werd een Soroptimist club opgericht in Antwerpen in 1930, tijdens het interbellum en in een economisch weinig voorspoedige situatie? Om deze vragen te beantwoorden is het onontbeerlijk om een kijkje te nemen in de historische achtergronden, die vrouwen er toe brachten, zich te verenigen. Bij dit overzicht is het belangrijk te zien hoe de vrouw zich profileerde in de maatschappij van toen in een grootstad. Verder zal worden nagegaan in welke omstandigheden deze beweging ontstond en de betekenis hiervan op internationaal vlak.
Als bron werd voornamelijk de eerste correspondentie uit de archieven van club Antwerpen geraadpleegd. Tot nog toe was alles gebaseerd op mondelinge overlevering gebaseerd. Er dient rekening gehouden te worden met het feit dat deze archieven onvolledig zijn; tijdens de oorlogsperiode was de club officieel opgeheven alhoewel de contacten tussen de leden bleven bestaan.

Impressions 75 ans Club d’Anvers

Le premier club Soroptimist en Belgique, fut fondé à Anvers le 12 avril 1930.

Jeannine Lambrechts, conservateur honoraire des musées d’archéologie de la ville d’Anvers et membre de SI Antwerpen, expose clairement, dans un livret intitulé « 75 jaar Club Antwerpen opgetekend », la naissance du Soroptimist en Belgique, quelles furent les difficultés rencontrées par les fondatrices lors de la création du club d’Anvers  et durant les années de guerre, ainsi que leur importante implication dans l’extension du Soroptimist en Belgique et au Luxembourg.

Introduction
Voici 75 ans qu’un premier Club Soroptimist fut érigé en Belgique ; ce club vit le jour à Anvers en 1930. Le premier Club Soroptimist fut créé aux Etats-Unis en 1921, à l’image du Rotary Club, fondé en 1905 et réservé exclusivement aux hommes.
Comment se fait-il et pour quelle raison un club Soroptimist fut-il créé à Anvers, en cette période d’entre deux guerres se trouvant dans une situation économique des moins prospère ?
Pour répondre à ces questions, il est indispensable de jeter un coup d’œil sur le fond historique ayant engagé les femmes à se joindre. Il est important aussi, pour apprécier cet exposé, d’étudier le profil de la femme dans la société d’une grande ville à cette époque.
Nous examinerons ensuite dans quelles circonstances cette association vit le jour et son sens au niveau international.
La première correspondance trouvée dans les archives du Club d’Anvers est la principale source de notre exposé. La transmission verbale reste un élément majeur de nouvelles. Il y a lieu de tenir compte du fait que nos archives sont incomplètes : le club fut officiellement mis en sourdine durant la guerre, quoique les membres gardèrent le contact.

Introduction
75 years ago the first Soroptimist club was founded in Belgium; this occurred in Antwerp in 1930. The first Soroptimist club was formed in the United States, in 1921 following the formation of Rotary club in 1905 with restricted membership excluding women.
How and why was this club formed in Antwerpen in 1930, between two wars, in an economically far from prosperous situation ? The reply to these questions can only be found by looking into the historical situation when women felt the necessity of getting together. Which was the profile of women in an urban society ? Investigations will focus on the circumstances fo the formation of such an association and its importance internationally.
The survey of the first years is based mainly on the initial correspondence kept in the club's files; up till now everything was based only on verbal traditions. However the club records are not complete especially for wartime, when the club was discontinued officially by the occupying authorities, but members had casual meetings.
